In the six years that
the OWC Collegiate High School has invited students through
its doors for an accelerated program of study, we have met
many students who have varying abilities and interests in
reading—some who relish reading and others who are reluctant
or struggling readers. We have developed a school-wide
reading focus that engages all students in discovering the
joy and value of reading. Because of this program,
students’ skills have improved and their scores have
increased. Their new engagement in reading is demonstrated
in their hallway conversations; they have discovered reading
for pleasure and in doing so have become better thinkers and
writers in their formal academic courses.
You will not find here a
reading program, but rather a reading concept that can be
adapted to many grade levels, classroom settings, and
reading abilities. Our intent is to share best practices,
reading strategies, and professional insights about reading
that we have experienced at the Collegiate High School. We
hope that you will find something of value in for use in
your classrooms to help your students experience the joy of
reading.
